You might remember Jordan Magro from when he was part of our Spark Workplace Experience Program back in 2019. His work experience in our Structures and Infrastructure teams gave Jordan a taste of what construction life looks like, stepping into multiple roles while being part of our live project sites.

At the time of his placement, he knew a career in civil or structures was what he wanted. Jordan says, “I was set on becoming a chippy and moving my way up to foreman or working as part of the crane crew.”

Since completing his work placement, Jordan has been adding to his skillset. He completed year 11 VCAL before doing his Cert 2 in Building and Construction and completing his first-aid certificate.

We’re thrilled to have him finally part of our Symal family as an apprentice for our structures crew two years later. “There are so many opportunities to upskill on our jobs,” he says.

“I’m part of many safety initiatives, such as installing handrails and structural steelworks, and it’s been great learning about vital safety protocols. No day is ever the same; some days I’m working on carpentry, and other days, I’m concreting.”

“It’s great to work with different people to see how they do things, and then you can find what methods work best for you.”

Jordan’s outlook has remained the same since day one “I still love building and working with my hands. During my placement, I got an insight into cranes, and there’s been a fire burning ever since.”

By joining our learning programs, you’ll have the opportunity to gain experience and exposure to all areas of construction within Symal. Our students are encouraged to be anything they want, from engineers to chippy’s to crane operators and beyond.
