Matt Martin started with Civilex in May 2017 as an undergraduate with little more than textbook knowledge of the civil construction industry. He applied for the Ignite Graduate Program, a comprehensive two-year program with one of his best mates Sanjay and now, just 14 months later, he’s successfully fast-tracked his Ignite Graduate Program, relocated to NSW and is working on one of Civilex’s largest projects to date.

So how did Matt achieve such an impressive result?

Matt is a quietly ambitious graduate. His determination and drive to complete the Ignite Graduate Program sooner rather than later was his focus and he made it happen. Accompanied by his passion for civil construction, Matt embraced the opportunity to work on several diverse projects and was open to mentoring by successful Civilex Project Managers.

As an undergraduate, Matt worked on the Mt Gellibrand Wind Farm project where he was exposed to major earthworks and structural concrete for the construction of the turbines. It’s now only fitting that he’s part of the construction and delivery team for the Collector Wind Farm project – located just outside of Goulburn, NSW. Matt says, “It’s like Mt Gellibrand, albeit with more roads and turbines to construct. Plus, I’m living a fair way away from home with this one.”

Matt started his graduate journey on expanding the capacity of both Berwick and Strathmore Railway Station car parks. He says, “It was an extremely hands-on project which afforded me a high level of exposure to the work that would form my civil foundation experience.” Matt then moved to CD9 (Caulfield to Dandenong as part of the Level Crossing Removal Authority project) working under Civilex Project Manager Nick Loucaides and says, “The constant pressure to perform and meet client deadlines throughout what could only be described as a beast of a project was a great experience. I also gained so much from Nick’s mentorship and working under his management.”

Matt has achieved what many graduates dream about. Congratulations Matt!

If there’s any advice that Matt could impart to his fellow Ignite Graduates or future graduate applicants, it is to continuously check their Ignite Graduate Workbook and get Project Managers to sign off on the completion of tasks and essential skills. Matt says, “It’s all up to you – your initiative and your drive. It’s your program.”
