Our work experience program can change how high school students view their career options. Year 10 student Nelson spent a week with our project teams learning about all the wide variety of roles that make up the construction world – an industry Nelson knew little about until now. “Work experience is important because it helps us determine what we want to do. I thought this would be a good opportunity for me because I still don’t know what I want to do and now, I have a rough idea of an industry I’d like to get into because I’ve tried a little bit of everything while I’ve been here.”

“I worked a lot with the estimating team. They took me to industry briefings for open tenders and I got to check out completed Symal projects like Mossfield Reserve to understand the construction cycle from bid to build. There’s so much work that goes into it that you don’t hear about.” Says Nelson.

Thanks to mum and Symal’s Pre-Contract Coordinator Blanca Acosta for engaging in conversations about her work in construction at home.

We want to inspire the next generation to consider a career in this exciting and dynamic industry by encouraging conversions with teachers, parents, and school career counsellors about our Spark work experience program. Spark is designed to open up possibilities and give high school students the opportunity to get a hands-on taster of the construction industry.

“It’s been really fun, I can see myself working in this field on the corporate side of things.” Says Nelson.

We can’t wait to see where Nelson takes his career.
