Symal secures landmark Infrastructure project – Eastern Freeway Upgrades: Burke Road to Tram Road

Signed, sealed….and now to do what we do best – deliver!

We’re ready to build better together with the Victorian Government after being awarded the contract to deliver the first stage of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades.

The contract award will see Symal, in an alliance with Major Road Projects Victoria, Laing O’Rourke, Arcadis and WSP, upgrade the Eastern Freeway between Burke Road and Tram Road.

This transformative project will benefit the community and commuters with modern express lanes, new traffic management technology and the initiation of Melbourne’s inaugural dedicated busway. A new interchange in Bulleen will provide a seamless connection with the North East Link tunnels – linking Melbourne’s east with the M80 Ring Road, reducing travel times by 35 minutes and taking 15,000 trucks a day off local roads.

CEO Nabeel Sadaka extended gratitude to the Victorian Government for the confidence in entrusting Symal with this monumental project, highlighting Symal’s strong performance and track record in delivering major road projects to the highest standards.

The Eastern Freeway – Burke to Tram upgrade includes extensive road and bridge enhancements, a new interchange linking the Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels, with noise protection meeting tough new traffic noise standards. Additionally, new and upgraded walking and cycling connections, enhancements to Koonung Creek Reserve, and revitalised wetlands and open spaces for the community are integral aspects of the project.

Over the past year, Symal has actively collaborated with the Victorian Government to refine project methodologies, emphasising the importance of every project as an opportunity to develop unique solutions.

Our design and constructability expertise has been provided to support the project’s planning process, resulting in the creation of an Urban Design and Landscape Plan, recently exhibited for public comment.

Symal has started site preparation, with major works scheduled to begin next year.

The ambitious project is set to be completed in 2028, reflecting Symal’s commitment to building a better future in partnership with the community and stakeholders.
