The $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade public-private partnership comprises priority road upgrades and more than 260 kilometres of road rehabilitation and maintenance across Melbourne’s west for 23 years.

Civilex is delivering the key upgrade at Dunnings Road and Palmers Road between Princes Freeway and Point Cook Road. Civilex previous works included road works, a new roundabout and shared user footpath that was published to our website.

More recently, Skeleton Creek Bridge was the focus of a three-night lifting bridge beams works whereby the team worked throughout the night under lights that saw 21 bridge beams weighing a total of 850 tonnes lifted into place by two 250 tonne cranes.

Civilex General Supervisor Jason Sutherland has been hands-on throughout the lifting works over the weekend said, “I could not be happier with all members of the bridge beams lifting team – from the planning phase and pre-works through to installation. More importantly, we were able to conduct the works safely without delay and minimise disruption to Point Cook commuters.”

There has been a dedicated team effort involved in the bridge beam lift over the weekend. Civilex Civil Superintendent Ben Gargiulo said, “The installation of the beams was executed perfectly due to our precise planning, working alongside professional subcontractors Civil Infrastructure Group and Brent Young Cranes and a dedicated field team. In just three nights we had a bridge deck!”

Civilex Safety Manager George Markelis adds, “Civilex and its subcontractors collaborated during risk workshops and displayed positive safety cultures both in the lead up to the beam lifting works – performing rescue drills ensuring all the elements of the plan were considered and prepared for seamless lifts across the three nights. A great team effort.”

Work is on track to complete this section of Dunnings and Palmers Roads by the end of the year, helping to reduce traffic congestion, deliver more reliable travel times and improve safety in the area.

Civilex is part of the Netflow consortium – also comprising Plenary Group and Cintra as joint project sponsors and SPV managers, Plenary as financial arranger, WBHO Infrastructure as head contractor, and the Amey Broadspectrum joint venture as services contractor – contracted by the Victorian Government to deliver the project in partnership with Major Road Projects Victoria and VicRoads.
