Unyte wrapped up Stage 2 Phase 1A of the Northern Memorial Park's River Red Gum Parklands precinct, for the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, delivering new burial areas, civil infrastructure and landscaping to support the park’s future growth.

The project involved extensive earthworks, new internal roads, stormwater drainage and underground services, alongside the construction of burial plots and monumental beams. The team also delivered road pavements, kerbing, line marking and signage, as well as sewer, irrigation, electrical and communications infrastructure to support the precinct’s ongoing operations.

Bringing the precinct together

A big part of the works involved shaping the surrounding landscape. Unyte constructed shared user paths, granitic sand and cement-treated pathways, retaining and seating walls, timber-edged plots and bespoke sandblasted feature walls. A new boardwalk and balustrade, landscaped areas, seating, feature rocks and extensive planting helped create a cohesive finish across the precinct.

The team also delivered supporting infrastructure for cemetery operations, including a spoil yard with a concrete hardstand and container dome shelter, along with fencing and barriers throughout the site.

Working around the day-to-day

With the cemetery remaining operational throughout construction, careful planning was essential to keep works moving while maintaining safe access for visitors and cemetery staff. The team staged activities and coordinated temporary fencing and traffic management to minimise disruption, while arranging the early handover of monumental grave plots to support the cemeteries’ ongoing operations.

Working closely with the client and design team, Unyte also addressed site conditions as they arose and explored practical ways to manage excess earthworks material, including opportunities for reuse in future stages.

Now complete, Stage 2 Phase 1A expands Northern Memorial Park’s burial capacity and improves access throughout the River Red Gum Parklands precinct. The result brings together essential civil infrastructure, thoughtfully designed landscape features and new burial areas, creating a lasting addition to the wider parklands.
