World Environment Day 2025: Rethinking waste at work

  • What we do

To celebrate World Environment Day 2025, we swapped spreadsheets and steel caps for something a little different - an interactive eco workshop that turned plastic waste into something worth keeping.

Hosted by Precious Plastic Melbourne at Sycle in Avalon, the session brought together team members from across the Group for a hands-on experience in sustainability. Using everyday tools, we transformed discarded plastics into bright, reusable creations including trick yoyos, mini plant pots, triangular pens and colourful carabiners.

It was a fun, practical reminder of what’s possible when we change the way we look at waste.

Sustainability that sticks

Construction plays a big part in waste ending up in landfills, and at Symal, we know we have a responsibility to help shift that narrative.

We embed sustainability into the way we plan, build and operate. From major project sites to office initiatives and grassroots workshops like this one, we’re committed to leading by example and creating real impact.

Sycle is helping drive this mission forward by transforming construction and demolition waste into materials with real purpose.

Awareness leads to action

Change doesn’t just happen. It starts when people understand the impact of their choices and feel empowered to do things differently.

As Ari Karavias, Executive General Manager of Sycle, shared:

“This workshop is about more than just recycling. It’s about inspiring innovation, reinforcing our environmental values and showing that everyone can play a part in the circular economy.”

“When people truly understand the environmental impact of their choices, they are more likely to change behaviour. That awareness helps shift the conversation from short-term convenience to long-term responsibility.”

This workshop brought us together, sparked new conversations and reminded us that every role at Symal has the power to influence positive change.

We’ll keep rolling up our sleeves, challenging old habits and finding new ways to lead with impact.
