A safer crossroad for a growing Wyndham Vale.

The Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade is transforming one of Wyndham Vale's busiest intersections, improving safety and traffic flow for more than 30,000 vehicles travelling through the corridor every day.

Delivered on behalf of VIDA Roads, the project is replacing the existing roundabout at Ballan, Greens and McGrath roads with a new signalised intersection, while also upgrading the adjoining McGrath Road (south) crossing. The works will improve capacity, reduce congestion and create safer connections for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport as Melbourne's west continues to grow.

Building. Better. Together.

Working within one of Wyndham Vale's busiest transport corridors has required careful planning, staged construction and close collaboration between Symal, VIDA Roads and key stakeholders.

The project includes a new signalised intersection, road widening, full pavement reconstruction, drainage upgrades, kerbs, medians, street lighting, signage, intelligent transport systems and new walking and cycling paths. Dedicated bus priority lanes and upgraded intersections will also improve the reliability of public transport through the corridor.

Throughout construction, maintaining access for residents, local businesses, schools and public transport has remained a key priority. By staging works in manageable sections and planning around peak traffic movements, the team has minimised disruption while safely delivering one of Wyndham Vale's most significant road upgrades.

Once complete, the upgraded intersection will provide safer crossings, improved traffic flow and more reliable journeys, creating a safer and better-connected road network for the growing community.

    Design completion and site mobilisation

The team hit the ground running, completing the project design, establishing the site compound and preparing for full construction. Utility relocations also kicked off, helping prepare the site for the major construction works ahead.

Traffic switch and stage 1 road reconstruction

The year began with a three-week night shift campaign to carefully shift Ballan Road and the existing roundabout around 10 metres south, creating space for future stages. Stage 1 then saw McGrath Road North closed, rebuilt and reopened ahead of schedule, restoring access, including BP's second driveway, and allowing the team to move straight into Stage 2. Utility relocations continued across the project, clearing the way for the next phase of construction.

Utility completion and major civil works

With utility relocations complete, construction shifted into full swing. Crews focused on delivering major civil works while carefully maintaining access for local businesses. Works outside BP were prioritised, with night shifts helping reopen the driveway well ahead of schedule and minimising disruption for customers and the wider community.

Ballan Road reconstruction and traffic switch

During a full weekend closure, the team reconstructed Ballan Road from the ground up, completing new earthworks, pavement, kerbs, shared paths, medians and line marking while removing the old roundabout and switching traffic onto the new road alignment. Despite heavy rain, challenging ground conditions and the coordination required around a nearby childcare centre opening, the milestone was delivered successfully, allowing Stage 3 to begin months ahead of schedule.
  • 2026 • July – Current

Stage 3 earthworks and intersection construction

With the major traffic switch complete, the team has transitioned into Stage 3, where earthworks are well underway and construction continues across the new intersection. The project remains ahead of schedule as crews progress towards the next major milestones.
