Ahead of Anzac Day, Symal and Sycle came together with a shared purpose. As a team, we spent three days at the Spotswood Kingsville RSL with our sleeves rolled up and ready to give the place a well-deserved refresh.
The RSL was looking a little overgrown, so we got stuck in, giving back to the people who’ve given so much back to our country — mowing lawns, trimming hedges, removing stubborn shrubs, and tidying garden beds. Three skip bins later, the place was looking better than ever.
A few days later, we were honoured to return – this time for a special early Anzac Day lunch. Team members from Symal HQ joined those involved in the clean-up to pause and reflect on the meaning of the day, surrounded by the people who keep the Anzac spirit alive. Through stories shared and time spent together, we gained a deeper appreciation for the RSL community and the legacy they carry forward.
“By coming together over a shared meal, we had the chance to get to know the people behind the RSL, embrace the culture and show what community really means,” said Joe Piasecki, Veteran Engagement Lead.
For many, the RSL is a space of connection, support and remembrance.
“The RSL is a place where you can come for social connection,” said Peter Bellion, veteran and member of the Spotswood RSL. “It’s been great having the team at Symal come through and do some of the heavy lifting that volunteers here couldn’t have done on their own.”
As we pause this Anzac Day, this small act of service was our way of honouring those who’ve served our nation, past and present, and showing our gratitude in a tangible way.
