Meet Alisandro-Omar Bradford, our newest Spark student!
Hailing from Thomas Carr College, Alisandro is a year 10 student with a keen interest in civil engineering. He spent the week out on the Bulleen Project alongside his dad, Omar Bradford, a Symal carpenter.
Before starting his work experience with us, Alisandro’s interest had been sparked in the construction industry after heading out to various plastering jobs with his dad, getting a feel for the industry.
‘After working with dad, I really started to think about working in construction, so work experience at Symal sounded really exciting.’
He began his jam-packed week at Bulleen with a tour of site, getting a peak into what life on site is really like. He was taken through safety inspections around the site and roadways, then got his hands dirty as well as worked alongside Symal team members with key tasks including cleaning scraps for the ramp installations and inspecting frameworks for concrete pours.
For this excited Spark student, his favourite part of the experience was the strategic side of site life.
‘I loved getting into the office, learning how to do invoices, working on the drawings and plans, and cross-referencing those to ensure everything was up to date.’
As a budding civil engineer, Alisandro got a great taste of what life can be like working in the industry.
‘My work experience has definitely inspired me to continue down this path. I’d love to study engineering further on my way to hopefully becoming a civil engineer.’
We value showing students just like Alisandro how the construction industry is a viable potential path for their life.
In our one-week program, students learn from our experienced staff and Graduate Engineers about where a career in construction can lead with exposure to engineering, safety, administration, site management and operations, asset and logistics, information technology and survey.
