Symal conducted bulk earthworks for Rugby Victoria, developing new sporting fields in Bundoora. During excavation, contaminated waste was discovered, necessitating removal.
Various options were considered, including transporting the material to a landfill. However, due to cost and environmental considerations, the team chose on-site screening to separate contaminants.
This innovative approach not only allowed for the efficient reuse of fill material on-site for the subgrade but also facilitated the meticulous sorting of recyclable components like concrete, steel, and green waste. This resulted in a remarkable reduction, with less than 0.2% of the initial 6,000 tonnes of contaminated material needing disposal in landfill.
