The Melbourne Airport Value South Car Park expansion delivered critical additional parking capacity to support the continued growth of Melbourne Airport and improve the travel experience for passengers during peak holiday periods. Located at the corner of Airport Drive, Apac Drive and Francis Briggs Road, the project transformed the existing area into a modern, high-capacity sealed car park designed to improve accessibility, operational efficiency and customer convenience.
Delivered within a live airport environment, the project required careful staging and coordination to maintain ongoing parking operations throughout construction. Working closely with APAM, the team successfully balanced operational requirements with construction delivery, ensuring the airport remained functional and accessible during high-demand embargo periods.
Symal proudly delivered the expansion of Melbourne Airport’s Value South Car Park within one of Victoria’s busiest live operating environments, carefully staging works to keep the airport moving through peak holiday periods. Across Christmas and Easter embargo windows, large sections of the car park were progressively handed back to APAM to support increased passenger demand, while construction safely continued around active traffic, pedestrians and public transport movements.
The project transformed the existing area into a modern, high-capacity facility, delivering over 860 new sealed asphalt car parking spaces with improved access from Airport Drive and Francis Briggs Road. New entrance canopies, bus facilities, accessible amenities and smart parking technology including licence plate recognition systems, boom gates and automated tyre spikes were delivered alongside extensive underground infrastructure upgrades across the site.
More than just a car park expansion, the project focused on improving the overall customer experience for travellers arriving at Melbourne Airport. New lighting, CCTV, landscaping, wayfinding, pedestrian pathways and street furniture helped create a safer, more accessible and easier-to-navigate environment, while temporary bus shelters, lighting and pedestrian access were maintained throughout construction to minimise disruption for passengers and airport operations.
Sustainability outcomes were also embedded throughout delivery, with recycled crushed concrete reused across pavements and backfill material, alongside recycled asphalt pavement incorporated into surfacing works. The team also successfully managed PFAS-affected areas through additional testing and careful material handling, helping minimise unnecessary offsite disposal while maintaining environmental compliance across the project.
