Five years ago, we set out to do something different - to create real opportunities for Aboriginal people in the construction industry. Together with Hayden Heta, a proud Aboriginal man of the Wiradjuri Nation, we launched Wamarra with a clear purpose to break down barriers, build careers, and foster a more inclusive future for our industry.
From the beginning, Wamarra was never about simply filling a gap - it has always been about driving real, lasting change. Through long-term, sustainable career pathways, we have empowered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to thrive in construction, making a tangible difference in both individual lives and the broader industry.
Over the past five years, Wamarra has made a remarkable impact:
$195,000 invested in training and development
140,000+ hours of work logged by our Indigenous team members
140+ projects successfully delivered
80+ Indigenous team members provided with meaningful career opportunities
These milestones are a testament to the dedication, passion, and hard work of the entire Wamarra team. Every individual has played a role in shaping this success, and we couldn’t be prouder of everything that has been achieved so far.
One of the highlights of our journey is the annual Kup Murri celebration. More than just an event, Kup Murri is an opportunity to come together, honour Indigenous traditions, and strengthen the connections that unite us as a community. Witnessing the growth of this celebration since our first gathering is a powerful reminder of the vibrant culture we continue to build at Symal.
As we celebrate this incredible milestone, we look forward to the next five years and beyond. The success of Wamarra is proof of what happens when the right people come together with a shared vision. With continued commitment, collaboration, and passion, we will keep pushing what’s possible and creating even greater opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in construction.
Here’s to many more years of growth, impact, and meaningful change.
