FY26 was our strongest safety year yet, achieved during a year of significant growth for the Group.
Symal grew its workforce to around 1,800 people, delivered more than 200+ projects, across more of Australia, and welcomed five new businesses into the Group. At the same time, we recorded zero Lost Time Injuries across our SYL Group entities and have now gone more than 18 months without one.
Our Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR) also fell 38% over the year to a record low of 1.4 incidents per million hours worked.
That doesn't happen by chance.
It comes down to the care, focus and commitment of our people. It comes from leaders who treat safety as part of how we run the business, not a box to tick. And it comes from continuing to invest in the systems, skills and initiatives that help our people get home safe every day.
Throughout FY26, we continued to strengthen our HSE management systems across the Group, including the businesses that joined us during the year. We enhanced our approach to electrical safety, supported the development of in-house high-voltage and electrical engineering capability, and commenced two Executive-sponsored vehicle safety initiatives focused on driver behaviour and heavy vehicle compliance.
“This result didn’t happen by chance. It reflects the care our people show every day and the way safety is built into how we work across the Group. As we grow, the challenge is to keep raising the bar and making sure everyone goes home safe, every day.” says George Markelis, Group HSEQ Manager.
The impact goes beyond the numbers. Our strong safety performance also saw Symal's WorkCover premiums come in around 30 per cent below the industry average — a saving of roughly $2 million that can be reinvested back into our people, our projects and the business.
And safety isn't just physical.
During FY26, Symal was recognised as a Skilled Workplace under the Mental Health First Aid Australia Workplace Recognition Program. It's an important acknowledgement of the work happening across the Group to support psychological health and safety, backed by a growing network of trained Mental Health First Aiders and a people-led approach to wellbeing.
We're proud of the result, but we're not slowing down.
As the Group continues to grow, the challenge is to keep building on what works, bringing new people and businesses into the fold while making sure the care we show for one another continues to grow with us.
Because at Symal, no matter how fast we grow, getting everyone home safe is what matters most.
