Searo was launched in 2025 to give Symal something it didn’t have before: in-house electrical capability across the energy and infrastructure markets.

Just 18 months on, that capability is scaling fast.

FY26 was a transformational year for Searo, with the business securing and progressing major opportunities across renewable energy, EV infrastructure and utility-scale electrical projects. The growth is building a new layer of capability for Symal, and opening up more of the energy transition market to the Group.

For Daniel Meiklejohn, Executive General Manager of Searo and Locale, the opportunity ahead is significant.

“The addressable market between now and 2030 is huge, and Searo has already seen an exponential growth in its pipeline over the last twelve months.”

That growth is already translating into major projects.

During FY26, Searo awarded and commenced its first utility-scale electrical balance-of-plant project at Fulham Solar Farm and its integrated battery energy storage system in Victoria. The project includes a 100.8 MVA solar PV facility and 72 MW DC BESS, with Searo delivering electrical installation, heavy-lift coordination, testing and commissioning support across the medium-voltage and DC infrastructure.

The team continued to build its position in EV infrastructure, securing ongoing works for the IFM Investors and Ampol national retail EV charging rollout. Seven projects have been delivered to date, with a further nine secured and progressing toward delivery.

Searo secured its first engineering, procurement and construction contract for charging infrastructure and associated civil and electrical works for an electric heavy-vehicle fleet, extending its capability into a growing area of transport infrastructure.

Behind the individual projects is a bigger opportunity for the Group.

Australia’s energy transition is driving continued investment across renewable generation, battery storage, transmission, grid upgrades and electrification. Symal’s FY26 pipeline reflects an addressable market of more than $200 billion in committed, anticipated and proposed electricity generation and storage investment.

Searo gives Symal another way into that market.

By combining electrical capability with the Group’s established civil construction expertise, Searo is helping Symal participate across more layers of major energy projects, from civil and balance-of-plant works through to specialist electrical delivery.

“We are leveraging group synergies, pushing into the same market sectors, all of which have very strong tailwinds.”

That integration is already creating opportunities to work across the Group’s existing relationships and sectors, while building Searo’s own client base and capability.

The result is a business that has moved quickly from establishing its foundations to building a platform for scale.

“Through this patience and discipline, we've now established a tier one capability and a platform we can deliver on our accelerated growth aspirations.”

The next phase is about turning that platform into sustained growth.

With its pipeline expanding and its capability continuing to mature, Searo is positioned to take on larger and more complex electrical scopes across renewables, energy storage, utilities and transmission.

What started as a new capability for Symal is becoming an important part of how the Group participates in Australia’s changing energy landscape.

And with the market continuing to move, Searo is ready to move with it.
