Veterans at Symal: From service to compliance

  • Who we are

Get to know veteran Norman Donaire

For many veterans, the military isn’t just a job – it’s a way of life, a place of purpose, and a community of like-minded people.

As Norman Donaire, our Training and Compliance Coordinator discovered, stepping into construction can offer that same sense of camaraderie and fulfilment.

Life in the infantry

Norman served with the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) as an Infantry Soldier from 2002 to 2015. His career took him across Australia, from the 2nd Regiment in Townsville to training new recruits in Kapooka, before finishing his service with the 6th Regiment in Brisbane. After leaving the military, Norman knew he had invaluable skills, but like many veterans, the transition was challenging.

“I joined the military straight from school, so I didn’t know anything but the military - that was the daunting part. I think a lot of current serving members who want to be discharged feel the same way,” Norman reflects.

Life at Symal

With a willingness to learn, Norman secured a role as a Safety Coordinator, which paved the way for his current position as a Training and Compliance Coordinator for the Eastern Freeway – Burke to Tram Alliance.

“For veterans, it’s about having the right support and the time to learn. We already have the grit and determination to work hard – that’s what sets us apart,” he says.

Norman has found a strong sense of purpose at Symal, as the military share similar core values – teamwork and a strong sense of leadership. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with Symal – great people, great team, and great camaraderie. They give you a sense of purpose.”

Advice for veterans considering construction

To veterans considering a career in construction, Norman’s advice is simple:

“The values and skills you gained in the military – leadership, discipline, resilience, teamwork – they directly translate to the construction industry and are incredibly valued by Symal.”
