That extends all the way to creating opportunities for veterans transitioning into civilian careers. For Andrew Schintler, a Plant Operator and a veteran with a long-term career in the Army, joining Symal felt like the perfect next step in his career.

Life in the army

Andrew’s military journey began nearly 40 years ago when he enlisted in the Royal Australian Engineers Regiment in 1985. Over the years, he progressed as a Driver and Plant Operator, gaining invaluable experience maintaining and servicing heavy machinery. One of the standout moments of his service was being deployed to East Timor, where he played a massive role in restoring security and stability as part of the Army’s Engineer detachment.

Life at Symal

After leaving the Army, Andrew found himself drawn back to an industry where his skills could be put to good use. After receiving a call from our National Area Manager, Steve McInerny (Macca), Andrew decided to join Symal in 2021, bringing a wealth of experience operating heavy machinery and excavators to Symal.

Now, Andrew is a Plant Operator working on the Eastern Freeway – Burke to Tram Upgrade, focusing on bulk excavations and asbestos removal.

His favourite part of working at Symal? The people. Andrew thrives in a strong team environment and appreciates the camaraderie he shares with the crew.

Andrew knows that veterans have a lot to offer in the construction industry, with transferable skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and a strong work ethic.

“Within the Army, we like to finish things off properly and do things right, and I think that fits in with the Symal ethos,” said Andrew.
