Pakenham Roads Upgrade Project: Stage one complete!

We are excited to announce the successful completion of the Princes Freeway Interchange as part of Victoria’s Big Build Pakenham Roads Upgrade!

Delivered on behalf of Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV), this achievement marks a significant leap forward in easing congestion, improving road safety and connectivity for the local Pakenham community and surrounding areas.

With the first stage complete, Pakenham’s road network is now more connected and user-friendly featuring improved key interchanges, the removal of existing bottlenecks, and new walking and cycling paths. The community now has access to a variety of safe and enjoyable ways to get around, whether you’re driving, riding or walking.

A major project like this requires a dedicated team, and our people continue to deliver outstanding results. We worked more than 520,000 hours with zero lost-time injuries (LTI’s) – a testament to the team’s commitment to keeping everyone safe on-site.

We achieved a TRIFR (Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate) of just over 5, well below the client’s target of 8 – an incredible effort by the entire team.

On the sustainability front, we introduced foamed bitumen technology – a game-changer in road construction. By injecting foam, air, and water into the mix, we’re reducing material consumption and significantly cutting carbon emissions - our commitment to innovating with intent. With tough sustainability targets, the team pushed what’s possible to deliver the best results for the environment and the community.

Looking back on the project, Senior Project Manager, Ed Ginger, is proud of what the team has accomplished. “It was incredibly rewarding to see the team come together, stay focused on the end goal, and deliver an exceptional outcome ahead of schedule and under budget.”

This milestone is more than just a completed stage – it’s a reflection of the dedication, expertise, and teamwork that drive everything we do at Symal. With the Princes Freeway Interchange upgrade wrapped up, we’re already looking ahead to the next phase of the Pakenham Roads Upgrade - with works having commenced on Racecourse Road in late 2024.
