Since launching our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in 2021, we’ve remained committed to building genuine relationships and developing a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures and people.
To strengthen our ongoing commitment, we’ve been working closely with Wamarra and Indigenous Cultural Connections to run Cultural Awareness training across the Group. Held every quarter and built into our employee onboarding, these face-to-face workshops help create a more culturally safe workplace and environment, on-site and in the office.
Led by proud Yorta Yorta woman Seona James, the interactive workshop explores Aboriginal histories, cultural practices and the deep connection to Country in the areas where we live and work. Seona creates a safe and open environment where our people are encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and lean into new perspectives.
“Truth-telling enables healing and more inclusive work environments,” said Seona.
Making a lasting impact
These sessions are often eye-opening and invite personal reflection, and for many in our team, it’s the first time hearing First Nations perspectives in this way.
The conversations are never easy, but we know they’re necessary. And the same question often echoes as people leave the room:
“Why weren’t we taught this sooner?”
By creating space for honest reflection, our teams walk away with a clearer understanding of how to communicate respectfully, champion inclusive practices and contribute to a workplace where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.
“Seona has a real gift for creating a space where people feel comfortable to open up. She was incredibly engaging and made it easy for everyone to have honest, meaningful conversations,” said Martin Arentsen, Studio Manager, Symal.
We know building a culture of inclusion takes more than words. It takes action, it takes listening and it takes the courage to have real conversations that move us forward.
We’re proud to be on this journey, but we also know the work doesn’t stop here. There’s always more to learn, and we’ll continue showing up openly, with curiosity and with respect every step of the way.
