When Rachel Jones joined Symal as a labourer, she had a clear vision for where she wanted to go. She wasn't shy about it either.
From the beginning, Rachel was open about wanting to build a long-term career with Symal. When new opportunities came her way, she put her hand up, took on the challenge and continued learning from the people around her.
That ambition, combined with the support of her team and leaders, has seen Rachel grow into her current role as Team Leader on the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade.
Her journey is the first story in our new ‘Built here. Backed here.’ series. The series that celebrates our people behind our projects and the career opportunities that come with being part of Symal’s continued growth.
There isn't a single path to success here. Some people deepen their expertise in one area. Others explore different projects, sectors and roles across the business. Whatever the destination, the common thread is having leaders who take the time to invest in their people and teammates who genuinely want to see each other succeed.
Rachel experienced that from the beginning.
With support from her crew, she expanded her qualifications, gained experience across a range of plant and machinery and worked on projects spanning renewable energy, public spaces and major civil infrastructure. Every project brought new challenges, different perspectives and another opportunity to grow.
That investment has continued throughout her career, most recently with her progression to Team Leader.
"One of the best things about Symal is that we all have the same goal to get better and grow, and build people up," Rachel said.
We know our people are our greatest asset. That's why we invest in training, mentoring, leadership development and opportunities to build experience across our business. We encourage people to speak up, take ownership of their careers and chase the opportunities that matter to them. When they do, they'll find leaders who are ready to back them.
That culture is built on genuine care, strong relationships and a belief that everyone has something valuable to contribute. When people feel supported to learn, share their knowledge and challenge themselves, they achieve more than they thought possible.
